FAQs
What does a Newborn Care Specialist do?
A Newborn Care Specialist provides professional care and guidance for families adjusting to life with a newborn. This includes establishing sleep routines, offering feeding support (bottle, breastfeeding, or mixed), and emotional support for new parents. Learn more about our services here.
What does a Postpartum Doula do?
A Postpartum Doula provides emotional, physical, and practical support to families during the postpartum period. Their role is to help new parents transition into life with their baby by offering assistance with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or mixed feeding, creating healthy sleep routines, and providing newborn care education. They also offer emotional support, help with light household tasks, and ensure parents have the time needed to rest and recover. Postpartum Doulas tailor care to your family’s unique needs helping build confidence and balance during this transformative time. Learn more about our services here.
Do I need a Newborn Care Specialist and a Doula?
While both Newborn Care Specialists (NCS) and Doulas provide invaluable support for families, their roles are different and often complementary.
A Newborn Care Specialist focuses exclusively on the care of your baby, offering expertise in establishing routines, healthy sleep habits, and feeding guidance (bottle, breastfeeding, or mixed). They provide hands-on, around-the-clock care for your newborn, allowing parents to rest and recover with peace of mind.
A Postpartum Doula, on the other hand, offers a more holistic approach, supporting the entire family during the postpartum period. They provide emotional support, newborn care education, light household assistance, and help parents navigate the physical and emotional changes after childbirth.
Many families find that having both an NCS and a Doula provides the most comprehensive support—ensuring expert newborn care while also addressing the parents' overall well-being and recovery. Whether you choose one or both depends on your family’s specific needs, but together, they create a balanced and supportive foundation for the early weeks of parenthood. Will a Postpartum Doula or NCS help with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding challenges?
Yes. Both Postpartum Doulas and Newborn Care Specialists provide personalized feeding support, whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or using a mixed approach. Postpartum Doulas can help troubleshoot latching issues, advise on pumping and storage, and develop feeding schedules to suit your family’s needs.
Is a Postpartum Doula the Same as a Lactation Consultant?
No, a Postpartum Doula and a Lactation Consultant have distinct roles, though they often work together to support new parents.
A Lactation Consultant is a certified specialist with advanced training in breastfeeding. They are equipped to address more complex feeding challenges, such as ineffective latching, milk supply concerns, and specialized feeding plans. Lactation Consultants often provide solutions for medical or anatomical difficulties affecting breastfeeding.
If breastfeeding challenges require advanced care, a Postpartum Doula may recommend working with a Lactation Consultant while continuing to provide general postpartum support. Many families benefit from having both professionals on their postpartum team.
Will I need professional newborn or postpartum care if I have family nearby?
While family can offer wonderful support, professional newborn and postpartum care ensures you receive specialized guidance tailored to you and your baby’s needs. A Newborn Care Specialist or Postpartum Doula brings evidence-based and up-to-date expertise in newborn care, sleep routines, feeding challenges, and postpartum recovery, offering tools and techniques that even the most well-meaning family members may not have.
Can a Postpartum Doula help with postpartum depression or anxiety?
While a Postpartum Doula is not a medical professional, we provide emotional support and a safe, judgment-free space to process the challenges of postpartum life. At Precious Bundles Consulting, we take a more evidence-based holistic approach to care, which includes offering nutrition support to promote hormonal balance, physical recovery, and overall well-being.
By creating a nurturing environment and offering personalized guidance, we help ease the emotional and physical demands of the postpartum period. Additionally, we’re trained to recognize signs of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs).
When should I book postpartum or newborn care?
It’s a good idea to book care as early as possible to ensure availability, especially during peak times. Many families secure their care provider during the second or third trimester, but support can be attempted to be arranged quickly even if your baby has already arrived. Complete our intake form and schedule your free 15 minute assessment today.
Do you provide care for twins or multiples?
Yes. Caring for twins or multiples requires specialized attention, and as a Newborn Care Specialist, I’m fully equipped to help. I provide tailored care to meet your family's unique needs, from feeding schedules to individualized routines.
Can a Newborn Care Specialist help sleep-train and create a sleep schedule for my baby?
At Precious Bundles Consulting, we specialize in sleep conditioning, not sleep training, for newborns. It’s important to note that most infants are developmentally unable to undergo formal sleep training until after 16 weeks. While we wait for their sleep cycles to naturally mature, sleep conditioning focuses on creating a calm and consistent environment that lays the foundation for future healthy sleep habits. This gentle approach helps your baby—and you—get more restful and predictable sleep over time.
Can I get virtual postpartum care?
Yes. Virtual postpartum care is available for families who live outside my service area or prefer remote support. I can assist with feeding guidance, sleep strategies, and more through regular video and phone calls, ensuring you receive expert care no matter where you are. Contact us here for more information.
